PORT WASHINGTON - The Port Washington Purple Riders (3-3) on Saturday night turned back the Beach City Pirates (3-4) in a thriller. The Riders jumped to a 24-10 advantage at the end of the first period and then rode to margins of 37-24 and 44-42 at the next two stops. Jim Bender, John Landon and Larry Hagan ended in double figures for the Riders with 18, 12 and 11 points, respectively. Beach City was paced by Ed Hollinger's 9 points. Port connected on 19 of 62 field shots and Beach city 22 of 62. The big edge was in the foul shooting department where the Riders made 14 of 24 and the Pirates 7 of 8. Port Washington Reserves (3-3) picked up a win earlier by defeating the Beach City Reserves 40-31.
