BALTIC - The 1959-1960 basketball season got off to a big start here Friday night as the Baltic Eagles waltzed to an easy 82-24 win over an inept Augusta invader. John Rice and Gary Gerber, holdover veterans, paced the victors with 23 and 19 points, respectively. Sam Devault and Wes Crawford scored over half of the Augusta points, finishing with 7 and 6 points. The Eagles had first-game "jitters" in the first period, but they quickly wore off as they gained quarter leads of 16-6 and 36-11 and 55-15. With Rice, Gerber and Charles McPherson providing the big scoring punch and Bob Ladrach coming through with a tremendous performance under the boards, the Eagles showed they will be a team to be reckoned with in the many future weeks of basketball ahead. McPherson tallied 17 points. Last year the Eagles opened with a 98-36 victory over Augusta under Tom Bellville, now principal. This year they turned the trick under Jim Weinsz who was making his Tuscarawas County coaching debut. He is a former Dover High athlete. The Baltic Reserve Team (1-0) buried the Augusta Reserves 34-8.
