60 - Tusky Valley Stops Gnaden 56-41 (12-2-59)

BOLIVAR - Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) opened its 1959-1960 basketball season on a rousing note here last night. It rolled to a 58-41 conquest over Gnadenhutten (1-3), sending the Indians to their third defeat in four outings. Trojan coach Bob Heller was impressed with his charges' performance, but said they need a lot of polish and have a long way to go to reach the goal he has set for them. Last night the Trojans played a tight defensive game and limited the Tribe to only 41 shots from the field. The Indians connected on 15 for a 39 percent mark. The smaller Trojans, using speed as their main forte, fired at the basket 69 times and connected on 23 for 33 percent. Clarence Cantrill, senior veteran, apparently has regained the form that made him one of the most promising players in the county as a sophomore. He had 13 goals for 26 points. Jim Studer followed with 15 points. High for the Indians was John Hall with 11. Tusky Valley was behid 11-8 at the end of the first period, but moved to a 20-18 advantage at halftime and held the uper hand the remainder of the way. The Tusky Valley Reserves (1-0) edged the Gnaden Reserves (2-2) 32-31.
