TUSCARAWAS - Port Washington's Purple Riders (4-3) pulled the first major upset of the young season last night as they rose up with a second-half rally to knock the Tuscarawas Broncos from the unbeaten. "I'm proud of these kids," Coach Dick King said following th victory. "They have never quit this season, even when they lost, and I think they are really going to come now. They needed this win. They deserved it." Coach Kermit Smulbach, who had piloted theBroncos to four straight victories, said "I'm just glad it wasn't a league game. We hit poorly from the filed, but I've got to admit Port played a spirited game." After trailing the hosts for the first half, 19-12 at the first quarter and 26-22 at intermission, Port roared back with 10 straight points in the opening minutes of the third canto to go in front 32-26. Tusky retaliated and knotted the count at 36-all before Port went back to the front 41-38 at the end of the stanza. The Riders continued to hold the lead by narrow margins and were in front 50-47 with 1:45 left. Lanky Larry Hagan stole the ball at this point for Port and threw it down court to teammate John Landon who dropped it in for a 5-point lead. That was the game as Port then went into a control game, forcing Tusky to foul in order to stop the fast-moving clock. Jim Bender topped the Port attack with 17 points, while Landon hit for15 and Hagan had 12. Gary Caviness topped the hosts with 17 and Chip McCahill foiled with 11, while Phil Meese had 10. Tusky hit 21 of 81 shots from the field for 26 percent, while Port hit 18 of 61 for 29 percent. Tusky potted 8 of 11 charity tosses. Port sunk 19 of 26 charity tosses for the margin of victory. The Tusky Reserves (5-0) remained unbeaten by sinking the Port Washington Reserves (3-4) 45-26.
