60 - Strasburg Loses 53-51 (11-25-59)

BEACH CITY - Dave Smith's jump shot with 5 seconds remaining to play climaxed a fourth period uphill battle by the Beach City Pirates (1-0) and gave them a 59-51 victory over the Strasburg Tigers (0-1) in the opener for both teams here last night. Shortly before, with 35 seconds remaining in the game, big Bob Kurtzman cooly stepped to the foul line and sank two free throws to tie the count at 51-51. Strasburg gained possession, moved down floor and missed a shot. Smith then went into action, scoring the game winning points from about five feet out. The largest crowd in recent seasons to see a Pirate contest turned out for the game. Strasburg saw a valiant third period drive which netted 20 points, more than its first half output, go down the drain in the closing seconds. They were ahead by as much as 44-37 in the early moments of the final stanza. Tiger mentor Warran Binder, in his first season at the helm, attributed the defeat to costly mistakes in relinquishing possession of the ball. The Pirates had a well-balanced exhibition in their opener with Paul Slayman's 14 points leading the way. Smith ended with 13 and Bud Spurgeon and Bob Kurtzman had 12 apiece. Frank Wallick paced the Bengals with 20 points, while Dale Liggett came through with 10. Earlier, the Strasburg Reserves (1-0) downed the Beach City Reserves (0-1) 30-22.
