60 - Tribe Wins On Rebound Goal With 3 Seconds To Go 70-68 (12-23-59)

GNADENHUTTEN - Those who like their basketball exciting could ask for little more than the nip-and-tuck contest staged here last night as the host Indians (4-4) and Blue Devils of Midvale (3-5) locked horns in a battle royal. After going nearly 4 quarters of even play, the hosts finally pulled it out of the fire on a spine-tingling rebound shot by Junior Bill Blickensderfer with only 3 seconds on the clock, winning by two points. Midvale, which led nearly all the way, held a 35-28 lead at halftime. The Devils led 68-66 with 31 seconds showing on the clock. A drive by Ray Rank knotted the count at 68-all. Without getting a shot, Midvale relinquished the ball to Gnadenhutten with only 15 seconds left. A shot by Rank bounced off the hoop, but Blickensderfer followed up the attempt and dropped it in from inside the key. The lead changed hands a total of 9 times in the hotly contested game as Midvale sought to gain revenge over the only school that had defeated the Devils in regular season play last year. Scoring honors went to Midvale's promising Sophomore Neal Beans who hit for 22 points. The southpaw hit a phenomenal 10 of 13 shots from the field. Ron Breniser chipped in with 14, Warren Leggett had 15 and Ron Kaderly 13. John Hall led the attack for coach Bob Gaume's crew with 19, while Rank hit 18, Blickensderfer 13 and Carl Dichler 11. Midvale hit 48.5 percent on 30 of 62 action attempts, while Gnaden hit 46.8 percent on 30 of 64 heaves. It was Gnaden's third straight win. The Gnaden Reserves (3-5) also won their game by downing the Midvale Reserves (4-4) 33-23.
