63 - Baltic Upsets Port Washington 54-40 (1-19-63)




PHOTO:  In case you have any doubt who these girls cheer for---the small "P's" on the basketball mean Port Washington.  The sextet, proud as it can be of the Purple Riders, will be in action Saturday night when Baltic visits.  The Port cheerleaders are:  Susan Nigro (left kneeling) and Mary Lou Martin and Lana Glazer (left standing), Marsha Casteel, Betty Lewis and Mary Ann McCune.

PORT WASHINGTON - Baltic's Eagles (5-10) overcame a cold 1st quarter here Saturday night to turn back the stubborn Port Washington Purple Riders (8-5).  Coach Errol Jacobs' club snapped a 4-game losing streak by battling back from a 11-6 deficit at the 1st quarter to close the gap to one point, 21-20, at intermission.  The Eagles overtook coach Don Durham's Riders at the outset of the 3rd period and went on to post a 37-31 margin going into the final frame.  Baltic, which usually sports a 2-man offense in Dick Gerber and Dale Stein, got added scoring punch Saturday from Guy Limbacher.  Although Stein led the way with 22 points and Gerber was next with 17, Limbacher added 12 to the cause, his best effort of the season.  Larry Laisure was the ony Rider in 2 digits, getting 16.  The Eagles hit on 23 of 58 action shots for 41.4 percent and made 6 of 14 fouls.  The Purple Riders connected on 15 of 56 from the floor for 27 percent and drilled in 10 of 14 charity tosses.  Earlier, the Port Washington Reserves (6-7) blew away the Baltic Reserves (3-11) 42-29.
