63 - Garaway Upended By Hiland 65-52 (1-2-63)
SUGARCREEK - Hiland's Hawks (6-1) streaked to their 6th win of the season here last night, whipping Garaway's Pirates (4-4). Coach Joe Richards' cagers battled on even terms in the first period, which ended deadlocked at 17-all, but fell behind 21-28 at intermission and 49-35 after 3 quarters. Coach Bob Schrock's club employed a zone-type press on the Pirates in the 3rd period to pull out in front. Four Hawks hit in double figures, to overcome the 24 point effort of the Pirates' Don Deetz. Randy Miller had 13 for Garaway. Bill Horrisberger and Norman Feller each had 15 for Hiland, 11 of Horrisberger's coming via the foul line. Art Mullet had 14 and Joel Menuez 10. Hiland hit on 22 of 45 action shots for a hot 48.8 percent and made 21 of 22 free throws. Garaway also enjoyed a good night from the field, hitting on 19 of 46 for a fine 41.3 percent. Garaway hit on 14 of 22 from the charity stripe. Both teams return to action this weekend, Garaway hosting Stone Creek in a Tuscarawas County League encounter Friday and then meeting the same Hiland team at Berlin Saturday. Earlier in the night, the Garaway Reserves (6-1) downed the Hiland Reserves 40-30.
