MIDVALE - One of the big surprises of the year, Midvale (7-1) (14-4) virtually sewed up its co-league title in the 1st quarter exploding for a 24-8 lead in the initial 8 minutes of play with Port Washington (5-3) (9-8).  Coach Pete Hilliard's Blue Devils, with only one regular back from last year's co-league title holders and one other letterman, were never in trouble.  Their pressing defense was credited with getting Midvale off and running.  Having previously set a new school scoring mark for regular season play, Junior Dean DeMattio added to his total with a 31-point performance, giving him 582 for the season.  DeMattio was the sixth-man for Midvale last year.  Bob Byers, the only regular of last season, chimed in with 20 points.  Don Basquin chipped in with 14 important markers and Sophomore Tom Daniels netted 12 and furnished a big hand on the boards.  Ken Gay topped Port with 17 points.  Wayne Blind added 10.  The Devils hit 8 of 18 in the first quarter surge and ended with 36 for 73 from the field.  Port swished 19 of 47 action shots.  The Midvale Reserves (14-3) started the night off by blasting the Port Washington Reserves (7-10) 43-25.
