63 - Down The Line With Dan Kopp (2-5-63)

DOVER - What an exciting basketball season this has been!  Since several Tuscarawas County teams will end regular season warfare this weekend, we thought it would be wise to go over some of the highlights of the current campaign today instead of doing our scoring summary.  Taking the spotlight, of course, is the 53-point scoring effort of Baltic's Dick Gerber against Union December 18, setting a new school and county record.  Other highlights, not in any order of significance, include:

Midvale's Dean DeMattio, the leading point-getter in the county, eclipsing the school season scoring record with 451 markers, including 44 against Baltic December 21 as the Blue Devils established a new single game total.

Don Deetz of Garaway setting a school mark with 40 tallies against Dennison January 19.

Port Washington enjoying its best season in several years, now having a 9-7 record.

Strasburg racking up 102 points only last Saturday, the second-highest total in the history of the school.

KOPPY'S KORNE...It was learned yesterday that John Peters of Strasburg has a broken finger on his shooting hand.  The injury; however, did ot stop the high-scoring Tiger from racking up 41 points in 2 games on the weekend.  When Baltic beat Garaway 63-54 Friday night, it was only the 2nd time the Eagles had upended the Pirates since their consolidation in 1958-59.  According to our records here at the Daily Reporter, Baltic won 73-72 in the 1st meeting after the change, but Garaway had triumphed 7 straight times since then.
