BALTIC - Coach Pete Hilliard's Midvale Blue Devils (2-0) (6-2) established a new school scoring record here last night in routing Baltic's Eagles (0-2) (2-6). The 108 points were the most scored by any Big Blue aggregation, the previous high being 105 in 1958 when a Midvale quintet rocked Port Washington 105-68. Although the entire team put on quite a performance, the spotlight was centered around Midvale's 6-2 Junior center Dean DeMattio. The hot-shooting Devil burned the nets from all angles for 44 points, the best individual mark at Midvale in several years and just 5 shy of the school record set by Frank Baumholz in 1937. Baumholz is one of the greatest athletes in the history of Tuscarawas County, also playing professional baseball for a number of years. DeMattio's outburst gives him 210 points for the year, an average of 26.33 per contest, second in the county. Baltic's Dick Gerber leads the county in scoring with 218 points, an average of 27.25. Gerber, who set a new school and county record Tuesday at Union with 53 markers, took a back seat to DeMattio last night; however, as the Eagle got "only" 17. It was quite a game for the first quarter, as the 2 teams battled back and forth all the way. The Blue Devils finally managed to go in front 28-20 at the first stop. Coach Errol Jacobs' aggregation got colder as the game went on, as Midvale took a 54-31 lead at intermission and was on top 81-44 after 3 periods. The Eagles used a collapsing defense in an effort to halt the lanky DeMattio, but Tom McPherson ruined the strategy, getting 10 of his 20 points in that frame. DeMattio then went wild in the 2nd quarter, hitting from the key most of the time for 18 of Midvale's 26 tallies. Don Ickes added 10 for the Devils. Dale Stein, who played an outstanding game, getting 15 rebounds, added 16 for Baltic. The Big Blue hit on 38 of 82 action attempts for a fine 46.3 percent. The Eagles managed to connect on 24 of 62 for a respectable 38.7 percent. The Midvale Reserves (7-0) also won in a rout against the Baltic Reserves (1-6) 65-27. Earlier in the night in the Junior High game, Baltic nipped Midvale 34-32.
