NEWCOMERSTOWN - During the 3rd Annual Newcomerstown Holiday Tournament, a big 2nd quarter and defensive mistakes by St. Joseph's (0-5) in the final seconds enabled Baltic (3-6) to gain the victory.  The Eagles outscored the Ramblers by 8 points in the 2nd stanza, after Coach Art Teynor's aggregation had taken a 16-15 lead at the 1st stop.  Then, after the Ramblers had fought back gallantly to get within striking distance in the fading minutes of the game, Dale Stein got loose under the basket for a pair of "bunnies" to keep the Eagles in a comfortable lead.  Baltic led 50-45 after 3 periods.  Three Ramblers hit in double figures, but they couldn't overcome the one-two punch of Stein and  Dick Gerber.  Stein had 26 points, his best effort of the year.  Gerber had 21.  Jim Mari paced the Ramblers with 20 markers.  Gene Martinolli had 16 and Roger Lammers 17.  Mari and Martinelli also enjoyed their best nights of the season.  Lammers' high was an 18-point outburst againsts Mt. Vernon St. Vincent.

The Ramblers played hot and cold, falling far behind and then rallying to catch up.  But they couldn't find the spark to send them into any comfortable lead.  Coach Errol Jacobs' club took an 8-2 lead early in the tiff and led 12-8 before Dave Richards hit from the corner to tie it for the  Ramblers.  Lammers then connected from the free throw line for a one-point lead.  The score exchanged hands 5 times in the next few minutes, before Baltic spurted into a 22-18 lead.  St. Joseph's came right back to tie on a 2-pointer by Mike Fearon and a pair of fouls by Mari.  The Eagles then went to work and moved  into a commanding lead and after intermission went in front 41-30.  But the Ramblers waxed hot and hit from all angles to tally 13 points to 2 for the Eagles to tie once again, 43-43, at 3:55.  Once more Baltic halted the rally, going in front 50-43 at one point before the 3rd period ended.  The Eagles held a 10-point margin for much of the final frame, but the Ramblers kept pecking away to narrow the deficit to 4 points, 63-59, with 2:40 remaining.  Martinelli was the big gun in the rally, getting 12 points.  Baltic then got loose for the easy buckets and the gun sounded.  "We had plenty of opportunities," Teynor said.  "We missed several chances in the 1st quarter.  Then those mistakes on defense in the final seconds really hurt.  We looked good at times, but made too many mistakes at crucial  times."  Both teams were plagued with foul trouble, as 18 personals were called against St. Joseph's and 19 against Baltic.  The Ramblers made 15 of 26 free tosses and Baltic 16 of 27.  St. Joseph's managed to hit on just 23 of 80 shots from the floor, good for 28.7 percent.  Baltic got fewer attempts, 52, but hit on 26 for a fine 50 percent.
