NEW PHILADELPHIA - As has been the case so many times this season, Dean DeMattio was the big gun for Midvale (15-4) in its victory over Gnadenhutten (7-14). The 6-2 Junior sharpshooter missed his 1st action shot, but then canned 12 in a row before missing his final two. He also drilled home 5 of 8 free tosses to take game scoring honors with 31 points. Midvale spurted to quick 4-1, 10-1 and 12-3 leads before taking a 12-8 cushion at the 1st stop. Coach Pete Hilliard's charges retained a 5 or 6-point spread for the 1st half of the 2nd quarter until Gnadenhutten, behind 22-15, caught fire and tallied 8 straight markers to go ahead 23-22 at 3:31. Midvale; however, was ahead 31-27 at intermission and retained a 6 or 7 point margin the rest of the game, being ahead 49-43 at the 3rd quarter rest. Midvale canned 25 of 58 action shots for 43.1 percent and made 11 of 22 charities. Gnadenhutten hit on 21 of 46 field goal tries for 45.6 percent and popped in 10 of 17 free tosses. Backing up DeMattio in the point department was Don Basquin with 12, the only other Blue Devil in double figures. Bruce Kohl of Gnadenhutten also put on quite a display of shooting before twisting his ankle with about 20 seconds left in the game. He got 20 points, Don Garrett added 12. (Kohl had missed the final 2 regular season games the Indians played due to a sore ankle.) Bob Byers and Basquin led Midvale in the rebound department, both getting 9. DeMattio pulled down 8. Ed Allensworth and Kohl topped Gnadenhutten.
