63 - Midvale Slips By Gnaden 62-56 (2-1-63)
GNADENHUTTEN - Midvale's Dean DeMattio established a new school scoring record for one season with a 33-point outburst to lead his club over Gnadenhutten (2-5) (5-13). The 6-2 Junior, the leading scorer in Tuscarawas County, now has 451 markers this campaign, surpassing the 430 total racked up by Larry Swinderman in the 1955-56 season. DeMattio now has 171 field goals and 109 fouls. His highest single-game effort was a 44-point outburst against Baltic. Tom McPherson and Don Basquin each got 10 markers for Coach Pete Hilliard's charges. Gene Bates and Bruce Kohl both had 14 for Coach Oren Thompson's Indians. Larry Rentsch had 13. Frustrated at the Gnadenhutten gym for the past 3 seasons, Midvale (6-1) (13-4) experienced some anxious moments in the initial quarter and trailed 16-14 at the 1st stop. But, with DeMattio hitting from the pivot with uncanny ability, the Blue Devils surged into a 33-22 advantage at the half and held on for a 45-38 margin after 3 periods. The Indians went on the warpath in the final quarter, pulling to within 4 points with 2 minutes left in the game. But, the Devils pulled away to 6 and 8-point margins and then nailed the victory down for keeps. Kohl was injured during the uprising and was removed from the game. It is not known at this time how serious the injury is. The Junior High game started the night off by Gnadenhutten stomping on Midvale 49-23. The Junior High Gnadenhutten team is presently undefeated this season. The Midvale Reserves (13-3-) turned around and stomped on the Gnadenhutten Reserves (7-10) 49-32.
