63 - Newcomerstown Wins Title As They Ice Baltic 77-24 (12-29-62)

NEWCOMERSTOWN - The victory was a big one for the Trojans (3-5) and their Freshman Coach John Hough as they pulled off one of the finest defensive games in recent memory in the 3rd Annual Newcomerstown Holiday Tournament.  "It even shocked me," Haugh said.  "The boys have been working hard and deserved it, but I could not believe my eyes at times the way they played defense.  We used the zone the same as always, but this time it really worked."  The Trojans, are in a big rebuilding season with only one letterman back from last year.  It was the lone monogram winner of the previous season and Dave Williams who led the victory.  Williams hit for 20 points in Saturday's title game and 11 the night before, being the kingpin in the offensive patterns.

The Trojans posted a 15-6 first quarter lead and raced on to 34-16 and 59-24 advantages at the next stops, then held the Eagles (3-7) scoreless in the final quarter.  Even high-scoring Dick Gerber had a rough evening, getting "only" 11 points.  Gerber set an all-time Tuscarawas County single game mark  of 53 in a single game 2 weeks ago and is averaging 27 per contest.  Dave Bidwell followed Williams in scoring with 17.  Keith Stoffer had 10.
