63 - Strasburg Routs Gnaden 87-58 (12-21-62)




STRASBURG - Juniors John Peters and Don Wallick played the major roles for Coach Warren Binders' Tigers (2-0) (5-1), getting 27 and 26 points respectively.  Wallick, 6-2 center, hit on 12 of 17 field goal tries and also pulled down 16 rebounds.  His 26 points is a personal career high.  Strasburg started at a snail's pace, holding a slim 17-12 margin at the first stop.  The tempo increased somewhat in the 2nd stanza, with the hosts holding a 39-29 lead.  The Tigers were in front 58-42 after 3 stops.  Gnaden (1-2) (3-6) jumped out in front, leading 5-2, but Vic Gessner came up with a 3-point play to knot the score.  Wallick then waxed hot, getting 10 straight points to put the hosts in front 15-5.  Peters took over in the 2nd period, getting 16 of his points.  Wallick came back strong in the 3rd, racking up 10.  Strasburg hit on 37 of 88 shots for a fine 44 percent.  Gnadenhutten connected on  20 of 64 attempts for 37 percent.  From the foul line, Strasburg hit on 11 of 21 and Gnaden 18 of 23.  Bruce Kohl paced Coach Oren Thompson's Indians with 22 points.  Larry Rentsch had 14 and Don Garrett 10.  Gessner added 13 to Strasburg's cause.  "The boys rebounded in fine style after losing to Dennison," Binder said.  "We got off to a slow start, but improved nicely as the game progressed.  We made fewer mistakes tonight than we have all year."  Strasburg Reserves (5-1) creamed the Gnadenhutten Reserves (3-5) 56-30.
