63 - Gnaden Clips Conotton 62-57 (1-26-63)
LEESVILLE - Despite a near-record performance by 5-10 Senior Bill Tope, Conotton Valley (2-8) was unable to make up for a shaky 1st quarer and fell to Gnadenhutten (5-12) here Saturday night. The Rockets were almost as cold as the weather at the outset, but treated the sparse turnout which braved heavy snow to fireworks in the closing minutes. Gnaden's pressing defense rattled the Rockets in the opening quarter and Conotton turned on a press of its own in the final period, closing the gap to 58-55 before a last-minute spurt by the Indians. Tope single-handedly carried the Rocket attack, hitting 13 of 35 from the field and adding 14 from the charity stripe for 40 points, his career high. He fell short of Jerry Rippeth's school mark of 44 set last year. The 5 other Rockets managed only 5 of 31 from the field. Gnadenhutten jumped off to a 7-0 lead before the hosts could score and led 17-5 at the 1st rest. The Tribe held 31-20 and 42-32 leads at the half and 3-quarter marks. Balanced scoring was the difference as 6-2 Junior Bruce Kohl led the Redskin attack with 23 points, followed by Larry Rentsch and Don Garrett with 13 and 11 respectively. Taking 76 shots, Conotton connected on only 18 for 23 percent. Gnaden made 22 of 56 for 34 percent. The Conotton Reserves rushed to a 45-36 victory over the Gnadenhutten Reserves (7-9).
