63 - Stone Creek Grabs Consoliation Title In 58-51 Win Over St. Joseph's (12-29-62)
NEWCOMERSTOWN - The Dover St. Joseph's (0-6) - Stone Creek (4-6) battle in the 3rd Annual Newcomerstown Holiday Tournament was a familiar pattern as far as Coach Art Teynor's Ramblers are concerned. The two teams fought back and forth all the way until the Ramblers became overanxious and committed numerous mistakes, an indication of their inexperience. The Panthers crept to a 15-13 lead at the first stop and were in front by just one point, 24-23, at intermission. The young Ramblers (all played reserve ball last year) fell behind at the start of the 3rd period, but rallied to catch up at the midway point. But, during the "nervous" stretch, the Panthers spurted to lead 42-34 at the final rest. "It was the same old story," Teynor said. "We stayed with them for 3 or 3 1/2 quarters, but then made several mistakes and got behind. We had some opportunities in the early part of the game, but couldn't take advantage of them. With a little luck and confidence in themselves, I think the boys will be all right. We've been in 5 of our 5 games this year, but are always under pressure, never being able to get out in front so the boys can loosen up a little. We'll have to make a New Year's resolution to do better." St. Joseph's the county's only winless combine, experienced another cold night from the field, hitting on just 18 of 62 action shots for a cold 29 percent. Stone Creek made 19 of 51 for 37.2 percent. Roger Lammers took game honors for the Ramblers with 20 points. Jim Mari had 16. Cliff Endlich and Ed Wallace shared laurels for the Panthers, both getting 13. Curly Endlich had 12 and Jim Billman 11. St. Joseph's was the defending holiday tournament champion, winning both the 1960-1961 and 1961-1962 affairs during banner campaigns.
