67 - On The Court With The Gnadenhutten Indians

GNADENHUTTEN - A 1st-year coach by the name of Jimmy Lower feels he came along as the Gnadenhutten High School baseketball coach at just the right time.  A recent graduate of Ashland College, the young mentor gleams as he talks of the  coming season.  And why not?  It isn't often a newcomer has 6 lettermen answering the initial practice.  But that's the rather pleasant situation for Coach Lower.  The lettermen are:

Senior Dan Jinks 6-0
Senior Bill Kohl 6-1
Senior Wayne Martin 6-0
Senior Don Finnicum 6-0
Senior Mike Kail 5-11
Junior Dan Bosley 5-11

Jinks poured 477 points through the hoops last season; although, the Indians had a rather dismal 5-14 record.  He hit 50 points in  the opening game against Newcomerstown and later in the season established a county record by harvesting 59 against Tuscarawas.  Also, especially pleasing to Lower is the fact that Jinks has no favorite floor spot when he shoots.  Kohl meshed 260 points last season and was particularly adept at sinking lefthanded pivot shots.  Bill also was a good rebounder throughout the campaign.  Kail totaled 84 points last season,  while  Martin  had 78.

Fighting the lettermen for starting roles are:

Junior Dick Brown 5-11
Junior Charlie Long 5-10
Junior Charley Crites 5-11
Junior Ken Huprich 6-1
Junior John Heck 6-0
Sophomore Ken Kohl 6-0
Sophomore Rog Hunter 6-0
Sophomore Richie Laughlin 6-0

Lower, successor to Oren Thompson, who held the Gnadenhutten reins for 4 years, said of his club:  "They have a great attitude and are hard workers.  If non-lettermen come through as expected big things could happen.  In view of last year's 14 losses, the boys have a lot to remember and I think we're going to floor a fighting ball club".
