67 - Garaway Hammers Conotton Valley 68-51 (11-26-66)
BOWERSTON - Garaway (1-0) surprised a lot of people, including many of its most faithful followers, here Saturday night. Head Coach Glenn Bower, fielding a combination of 3 Sophomores, a Junior and a Senior, saw his charges turn in a romp over Conotton Valley (0-1) in the season opener for both clubs. Bower was pleased with the Pirate performance and commented, "Even though our boys are real young, I thought they gave a real good account of themselves". The Pirates, who had 3 players score in double figures, committed only 8 turnovers, 6 of them in the 2nd half, while the hosts miscued on 25 occasions.
Senior Don Richardson paced the Pirate attack with 22 points, while Junior Errol Miller accounted for 15 and Sophomore Tim Miller for 14. Errol Miller pulled down 12 of Garaway's 44 rebounds. Kim Sedwick and Tim Miller had 9 and 8, respectively and Don Richardson 7. Pacing Conotton, which has only one returning vet, were Fred Strawser's 14 markers. Gary Palmer had 12 and Baker 10. Garaway connected on 26 of 69 from the field for 38 percent and 1st year Head Coach Alan Kennedy's Rockets hit a similar percentage on 20 of 52 floor shots. ThePirates meshed 16 of 32 free throws and Conotton Valley 11 of 24. The Rockets had 29 rebounds.
Larry Harding of the Garaway Reserves (1-0) scored 12 points and Dick Fankhauser 10 to lead the the team to a 29-28 triumph over the Conotton Valley Reserves (0-1).
