67 - Tuscarawas Valley Drops Out Of Tuscarawas County League

CANTON - Tuscarawas Valley last night was accepted into Stark County's revamped Senate League effective with the 1968 season.  It means the Trojans will leave the Tuscarawas Valley Conference whose officials will be notified of their move this week.  Strasburg, which also had received an invitation to join, submitted a letter to league officials indicating it is not interested.  Another Tuscarawas  County school; however, Claymont, had representatives Athletic Director Dick Dorland and Principal John Harstine, in attendance as observers.  With the addition of Tuscarawas Valley the Senate League, an all-sports conference, will include Sandy Valley, East Canton, Lake, Tuslaw and Northwest.  League officials indicated they are interested in adding another school so that there would be a 6-team conference schedule for football.

Tuscarawas Valley representatives at the session included Superintendent William Kinneer, Principal Harold Clevenger and Coach Jack Bair.  Bair said this morning that the overall athletic program presented by the Senate League will be better.  Tuscarawas Valley, he noted, will have nearly 500 students in the top 4 grades next year and the biggest school in the league has only 565.  He tagged the uncertainty of Tuscarawas Valley Conference membership, with the consolidation in Indian Valley and Tuscarawas Valley school district's own growth as major reasons for making the switch at this time.  "We felt if we're going to make the move,  now is the time to do it", Bair stated.
