67 - Port Washington Clips Newcomerstown 68-67 (12-2-66)
NEWCOMERSTOWN - The Newcomerstown Trojans (0-1) nearly pulled one out of the fire last night as they dropped a decision to the invading Port Washington Purple Riders (2-1). The Purple Riders led at all stops and was ahead by 11 points going into the last quarter as the Trojans began hitting the nets. Newcomerstown used a man-to-man defense, but was unable to get their hands on the ball as the Riders held it for the final 14 seconds to ice the verdict.
The big guns for Port Washington were Greg Bender, Jerry Stephens, Tim Page and Jeff Huston who tallied 19, 14, 13 and 13 points, respectively. The Trojans had 4 men in double figures. Jeff Schmidt hit 21 followed by Ron Hurst with 17, Wit Parks with 12 and Bruce Widder with 11. Senior Jim Hagen controlled the boards as he gathered in 16 rebounds for the Riders. Schmidt pulled in 12 for the Trojans. Port Washington was 36 percent from the field and Newcomerstown 30 percent. The Riders were 14 of 22 from the charity line and the Trojans 19 of 30. Huston was lost to the riders late in thegame via the 5-foul rule.
The Newcomerstown Reserves (1-0) broke the winning streak of the Port Washington Reserves (2-1) by downing Port 44-36
