67 - Tuscarawas Valley Burns Dover St. Joseph 60-44 (12-6-66)
"That one is on you," says referee Gene Hensel to Dover St. Joseph pivot man Dave Myers (52) during action in last night's game with Tuscarawas Valley. Myers had just laid low the Trojans' Tom Shroyer (55). Also pictured are Jeff Recchiuti (34) of the Ramblers and Dave Clugston (21) of the Trojans.
DOVER - A 29-point 4th period spurt after Dover St. Joseph (0-3) had cut a 15-point 3rd period lead to 2, propelled Tuscarawas Valley (1-0) to a triumph over the Ramblers in the Trojans' season opener last night in the Dover High Gym. It was the 3rd straight set-back for the Ramblers who entertain Malvern St. Edward Friday night and Newcomerstown Saturday. Except at the game's outset when it took a momentary lead, St. Joseph trailed throughout. Tuscarawas Valley, which plays at Strasburg Friday, went on top 3-2 when Tom Shroyer swished a foul shot.
The Trojans increased the lead to 15 points, 38-23 early in the 3rd stanza before the Ramblers began trimming it. St. Joseph was behind 40-33 entering the final stanza and scored 6 consecutive points, the last a layup by Charlie Zitoto to slice the Trojan margin to 40-39. Holding a slim 42-40 lead, the Trojans turned on the speed, hitting 11 points, 5 of them by Larry Adams, to wrap up the verdict. Adams, who sat out much of the 2nd half with 4 fouls, tied Rambler Dave Myers for game scoring laurels as each tallied 17.
While Myers was the only Rambler in double figures, Adams received capable support from Tom Shroyer and Jim Burkhart, who had 16 and 10 points, respectively. Tuscarawas Valley fired in 25 floor shots in 63 attempts for 39.7 percent and added 10 of 18 free throws. St. Joseph made 18 of 62 for 25.8 percent and 8 of 17 from the foul line.
The Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (1-0) also picked up a win trouncing the Dover St. Joseph Reserves 41-22.
