For one quarter the Tuscarawas Broncos (11-9) played top-notch brand of basketball. They slowed down in the second quarter and with a speedy, ball hawking, alert group of Tuscarawas Valley Trojans (16-4) whizzing up and down the hard court lanes, that was disastrous. They were behind only 16-14 at the end of the first period, but with the Trojans, and Clarence Cantrill in particular, putting on the squeeze, the last resemblance of life was snatched away from the Broncos. They fell behind 30-19 and 55-33 at the next 2 stops. Cantrill scored 21 points in the first half of action and ended the night with 34, for game laurels. He received a good helping hand from both Ron Lake and Bruce Ickes who scored 15 and 10 points, respectively. It was just a typical night for the Trojans. Loose and ready to dash the length of the floor at the drop of a handkerchief - or should we say basketball - they turned Bronco miscues into easy layup baskets. Tuscarawas County's leading scorer, Gary Caviness, bid farewell to county fans at least in the high school sport. He scored 21 points before fouling out with 15 seconds remaining. Teammate Dean Kerns added 10 points. Tuscarawas Valley enjoyed a successful night from the field canning 29 of 67 for 43.3 percent. It added 17 of 27 from the foul line. Tuscarawas could manage only 19 of 67 for 28.4 percent, in an obvious "off night" performance. It made 16 of 21 free throws.
