60 - 38th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" Tournament (2-12-19-1960)

PHOTO: Strasburg Tigers - Strasburg High ended its first season last Tuesday night under the coaching of energetic and youthful Warren Binder. But despite all their efforts the Tigers could manage only a 7-11 record. In view of their last 2 performances of the season, a 79-33 victory over Port Washington and a 83-26 romp over winless Brewster, the Tigers must be regarded as a threat in the Tuscarawas County Class "A" Tournament which opens next week in the Dennison High gymnasium. They are paired opposite Midvale. During regular season action, the teams spilt with Strasburg winning 52-50 at Midvale, and Midvale gaining a 64-60 overtime decision on the Strasburg court. The Tigers pictured above are: FRONT ROW - Jim Clymer (left), Jim Davis, Frank Wallick, Bill Seese, Dale Liggett and Coach Warren Binder. BACK ROW - Tom Jones (left), Ron Deibel, Walt Krantz, Charles Duff, Paul Fishel, Don Grove and Larry Wallick. Three years ago Strasburg was regarded as one of the top Class "A" combines in the state, but it has slowly gone downhill since. Binder, who succeeded Ernest Raber at the Tiger helm, vowed when he took the job that he would do everything in his power to put it back on that former pedestal. This season the Tigers defeated Dennison 54-51, Stone Creek 71-44 and Baltic 50-31 in addition to their other victories. Losses have been to Beach City 53-51, Garaway 65-61 and 61-37, Gnadenhutten 72-42, Conotton Valley 81-56, Uhrichsville 65-45, Waynedale 67-53, Sandy Valley 54-44 and Tuscarawas Valley 75-58 and 69-67. Setting the scoring pace for the Tigers this season has been Senior veteran Frank Wallick, a 6-3 center. Wallick, who was named to the coaches' All-County team last year, is one of the county's leading point makers with 309 points. Another Senior, Bill Seese, is the second leading scorer with 210 points. Opposite him at forward has been Dale Liggett, the third Senior on the squad, who has scored 159 points. Guard Don Grove has 114 points, and Jim Clymer, a 6-1 Sophomore who has shown great promise has 78 points. Should the Tigers get past their first tournament test, they must face the winner of the Garaway-Gnadenhutten game in semi-final action Friday, February 26. It will be a test of their true potential which they have shown too few times this season.
