60 - Garaway Beats 2nd Place TV Again 73-60 (1-20-60)

BOLIVAR - It's getting to look more and more each day that Tuscarawas County doesn't have a team to match the accurate shooting, well-balanced, smooth-working Garaway High Pirates (11-1). Tuscarawas Valley's strong Trojans (9-2) took a second try at slowing the County Class "A" League leaders here last night, but they fell in a non-loop encounter. Previously, Garaway had scored a 77-68 triumph over the hosts in a league battle. The Pirates have lost only to Holmes County's unbeaten Hiland powerhouse. Tuscarawas Valley's only defeats have been to Garaway. TV Coach Bob Heller had nothing but praise for Coach Jim Stull's Garaway aggregation last night. "They are a real fine ball club," the Trojan mentor stated. Tusky Valley kept right in step with the Pirates in the first period as the teams battled to a 10-10 deadlock. Garaway jumped to the front early in the second period and then led the rest of the way. The Pirates were 30-23 at halftime and 53-42 at the end of the third period. Four of the Pirate starters hit in double figures with center Charles Stingel scoring 19. Koran Zehnder followed with 17, Jim Gerber meshed 15 and Bob Raber had 11. Ron Lake's 14 topped the Trojans. Al Cerett and Bruce Ickes made 12 apiece. Only a 60-56 overtime loss to Holmes County's Hiland stand in the way for an otherwise perfect season thus far for the Pirates. They'll have a chance to avenge that defeat February 9 when they meet the Hawks at Sugarcreek. In last night's victory the Pirates made 29 of 64 from the field for a solid 45 percent. They hit 15 of 27 from the foul line. TV wasn't off either, ending with a 38 percent mark when 24 of 63 shots connected. It hit 12 of 24 from the foul line. The Garaway Reserves (8-4) dropped the Tuscarawas Valley Reserves (5-5) 46-34.
