PHOTO: Port Washington Purple Riders - If you're an Irishman you'd be understanding that type of language. And if you were Port Washington's Bill Fisher you'd understand why he might say it. Jim Studer (33) of Tuscarawas Valley is the "back breaker" as he scores on a layup shot in last nights Class "A" Tournament game at Dennison. Larry Hegan (40) of the riders attempts to stop the shot, while Bruce Ickes of the Trojans stands ready to grab the rebound should there be one.

Port Washington (9-12) should get an "A" for its inspired performance against Tuscarawas Valley (15-4). Sparked by Junior guard Jim Bender, who shredded the nets for 37 points, the Purple Riders were almost too much for the Trojans to handle. From start to finish the game was a crowd pleaser. Port, cast in an underdog role, quickly gained the support of all fans other than those sporting Tuscarawas Valley colors. The first period, which saw the Trojans end on top 18-13, even had a climatic ending. Port's Bill Fisher took a long shot goal try, hurling the ball from mid court, almost 42 feet, and connected. Fireworks really exploded in the second quarter. The hottest firecracker of all was Bender. He exploded for 18 points. With the score 28-24 in favor of the Trojans, Bender suddenly "got hot." He scored 12 straight points on 5 goals and 2 free throws to put the Purple Riders ahead 34-28 with 3:50 remaining in the period. TV, which applied a methodical, but successful press right in hand with its fast break, slowly regained lost ground. When halftime rolled around the score was knotted 38-38. Port continued its valiant effort in the last 2 periods. With 5:35 remaining in the third quarter it led 41-40. But the Trojans once again applied pressure and went ahead for keeps. They were on top 62-54 when the quarter ended. Tusky Valley, which has had to resort to playing its opponents tight as the result of little or no height, committed 21 personal fouls and could have been called for more. Port took 34 tries from the charity stripe and made 22. Tusky Valley made 20 of 25. Jim Studer and Clarence Cantrill were the Trojans' big 1-2 punch. Scoring 29 and 25 points, respectively, they counter-balanced Bender's one-man performance. Al Cerett also scored in double figures, tallying 13 before fouling out with 6:05 remaining in the final period. TV connected on 21 of 83 attempts from the field for 27.3 percent and Port made 24 of 61 for 37.8 percent. Port was a 74-53 loser to the Trojans in regular season play.
