A new era in basketbnall has descended on the nation. Players, such as Wilt Chamberlain, no longer are regarded as freaks, but necessities for success on the hard court front. But the "big boys," few as they are in this area, are taking a back seat to the "mighty mites" this season in Tuscarawas County. The annual Daily Reporter All-County Class "A" League Team, as selected by the sports staff, includes only one player over the 6-foot mark. Four are under 5-10, while one hits an even 6-foot, one is 5-10 and 3 others stand 5-11. Surprisingly enough, this year's aggregation is one of the best balanced scoring units in history. Six have totaled over 300 points for regular season play and the other 4 are well over the 200-point mark. League champion Garaway, which unseated Midvale from its 2-year reign, and Tusky Valley, which tied for second in the league with the Blue Devils, are represented by 2 players apiece. All other county teams, with the exception of winless Stone Creek, placed one player each. Garaway's Charles Stingel and Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas, 2 of the most prolific scorers in Tuscarawas County history, head the all-star aggregation. Both are third-year members. Midvale's Ron Breniser is another repeater, having been selected for last year's team. Others chosen were Ron Lake and Clarence Cantrill of Tuscarawas Valley, Frank Wallick of Strasburg, John Rice of Baltic, Ron Clark of Gnadenhutten, Koran Zehnder of Garaway and Jim Bender of Port Washington. Failing to repeat were Gary Gerber of Baltic and Bill Phillips of Port Washington.

Caviness, a starter since his Freshman season, has totaled 1,305 points over 4 seasons. This year he was the county's leading scorer with 389, an average of 21.6 per game. The Tusky star also has the single game point highs this season in the county. He scored 41 against Newcomerstown December 8 and later topped it, hitting 42 against Stone Creek February 6. He replaces Gnadenhutten's Ron Bradley as the Tuscarawas County scoring king. The latter was a member of last year's all-star group. Stingel has scored 1,137 points in 4 years, first with Sugarcreek-Shanesville High, and then under the consolidated banner of Garaway. He didn't score as many points as last season - but then he didn't have to. Teammate Koran Zehnder was popping the ball through the hoop at a high speed pace. But Stingel retained the distinction of being the team leader. He was the steadying influence in the Pirates' fine 17-1 season. He ended with 245 points this season, 63 less than last season's output. Zehnder was in a red hot battle throughout the season for the county scoring lead. He finally had to settle for second spot, with 382 points, one better than third place Breniser, who totaled 381. But he had a 21.2 per game average. Breniser was the only returning veteran to the Midvale team that went to last year's regional tournament. He also was the only Midvale player that participated in the 1958 state tournament. He took his role as team leader quite well pacing the Blue Devils to a record that most thought, could never be accomplished. When Tusky Valley's little Trojans turned to the fast-breaking, ball-hawking style of play they needed a man to be a perpetual ball of energy in going after the sphere. That player was Ron Lake, who stands 5-6. He performed the job in splendid style and at the same time scored 237 points. With Clarence Cantrill leading the scoring department with 287 points in 17 games the Trojans compiled a highly commendable 13-4 record. Frank Wallick, the tallest man on this year's team at 6-2 was a forte under the boards and in the scoring department for Strasburg. He ended with 306 points. Rice was a very important cog in the success enjoyed by Baltic this season. The Senior veteran, noted for his scoring achievement previously, proved to be a solid team man and was the No. 2 Eagle in the rebound department. He maintained his scoring abilities; however, ending the season with 360 points, an average of 18 per game and fourth best in the league. Bender, one of 2 juniors on the team, electrified Tuscarawas County fans with a 37-point outburst in the opening game of the county tournament last week as his Port Washington teammates almost upset Tuscarawas Valley. He ended the season with 318 points and was a mainstay for coach Dick King, who was in his first season at the Rider helm. Last is Ron Clark. The Gnadenhutten Senior is the smallest man on this year's team at 5-5. But if desire and determination mean anything, then he probably stands about 6-5. He also was one of the top scorers in the county, hitting the nets for 267 points, tops on a team that included teammates well over six foot.
