60 - Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball League Final Standings (2-13-60)

It was official today! Midvale's 2-year domination of the Tuscarawas County Class "A" League has ended. Sitting high and very mighty on the throne are the undisputed and unbeaten champion Garaway Pirates, who defeated Tuscarawas 55-33 last night. The title was made even more complete when Tuscarawas Valley was defeated 64-57 at Baltic. As a result the
Trojans are tied for second place at 6-2 with the defending champion Midvale, which edged Port Washington 64-63. The 1959-1960 Garaway team is undoubtedly one of the greatest teams in its history. It was only 2 short years ago that Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Dundee high schools consolidated. And this team is as great as any other historical combines floored by either school. Records dating back to 1938 reveal that neither school possessed an undisputed league crown. Sugarcreek-Shanesville and Strasburg tied for the crown in 1945 with 9-1 records. In 1940 there was a 3-way deadlock between Sugarcreek-Shanesville, Midvale and Baltic with identical 9-2 marks. During the World War II years when gasoline was at a premium, the league was disbanded, but had there been one Sugarcreek-Shanesville would have been the undisputed winner 2 straight years. Against league teams it posted a 9-1 record in 1942 and in 1944 had a 10-0 mark. The latter team won 26 straight games, advancing to regional tournament play. It was considered the greatest team in Sugarcreek-Shanesville history. Dundee's lone claim to fame was a tie with Midvale for the league title in 1952. Each had 9-1 records. Thus another historical chapter of the county's fabled Class "A" Basketball League has been turned. The final writings on the 1959-1960 season will be penned during the next 2 weeks as the league tournament takes place at Dennison High.
