Tuscarawas Valley may have at last escaped the "second-place" jinx. The Trojans, runner-ups in both the Tuscasrawas County Class "A" League and tournament to Midvale last season and headed for the same spot this year behind Garaway, drew into the seemingly easier upper bracket Saturday morning in drawings for this year's tournament starting February 19 at Dennison High School. In drawings last Saturday, the Trojans followed the same "second" pattern, drawing the No. 2 spot - but this time they got a break in going opposite Port Washington, Tuscarawas, Baltic and Stone Crfeek - teams they have beaten at least once and some twice this season. In the opinion of many of the county coaches - other than Trojan mentor Bob Heller - it meant a one-way ticket to the February 27 finals. But, no matter what bracket you happen to be in and no matter whom you face you can figure at the best that this year's tournament should be one of the best balanced ever. Even winless Stone Creek should have a say in who will be this year's champion. The Panthers, with one of the youngest teams in the county, have shown improvement with each game. It just might be that they could match the feat of Ken Newlon's 1952 "miracle show" in which an underdog Panthers suddenly caught fire and took the championship. Best quip coming out of Saturday's drawings was Gnaden Coach Bob Gaume's "do you want to scrimmage, too" to Garaway's Jim Stull after learning he had drawn the Pirates for their opening game. The Pirates have thumped the Tribe in 2 regular season contests.
