60 - Garaway Downs Spirited Gnaden 79-69 (2-22-60)

Paying no heed to the press clippings and prestige of the 1960 League Champion Garaway Pirates (18-1) the Gnadenhutten Indians (11-9) may have given the most inspired performance of the 38th Annual County Tournament thus far. Garaway, a lopsided winner over the Tribe twice this season, found them a determined aggregation that refused to quit. Down by 13 points in the second quarter and 11 at halftime, Gnadenhutten fired back in the second half in a bid to pull the major upset of the year. On the jumping antics of Senior John Hall's 11 points in the third stanza, Gnadenhutten whittled the margin first to 4 points at 65-62 and 67-64 before faltering in the stretch. The poise and the balance of the Pirates paid off when it counted most as 4 year veteran Charles Stingel rose up as the "take-charge-guy" for the champs. With the score at 67-74 with 2:33 left in the game, Stingel led a Garaway uprising with 6 important points to spearhead a rally that netted Garaway 12 points in the next 2 minutes, while Gnaden could manage only a lone charity toss by Ron Clark. It gave the Pirates a 79-65 advantage with 31 seconds remaining and the victory. One of the key factors in Gnaden's fall in the latter minutes was the loss of Junior 6-3 Ray Rank who fouled out with 5:10 remaining in the game. He had 13 points at the time and was an important part of the Gnadenhutten board play. Hall, who finished the campaign as the Indians top scorer with 355 points, hit 24 against the Pirates for team honors, while Carl Dichler also chimed in with 11. Bob Raber led Garaway with 25 points, while Stingel and Koran Zehnder scored 16 points apiece. Gnaden hit 22 of 67 shots from the field for 32 percent, while showing great marksmanship at the foul line with 25 successes in 34 attempts. Garaway's combine hit 33 of 81 from the field for 40 percent.
