60 - Port Nine Has Six Lettermen (4-6-60)

PORT WASHINGTON - Coach Dick King has 6 lettermen back from last year's baseball squad as the Port Washington Purple Riders prep for their opening contest Thursday.  Weather permitting, the Riders will host Tuscarawas Valley.  Port will also again field a track squad this season.  Five veterans are among the thinclads which have only one meet in addition to the county event scheduled May 10.  The tracksters are booked in a triangular meet at Midvale along with Gnadenhutten and the Blue Devils of Midvale.  The county meet will be held May 14 at Uhrichsville, involving all 9 schools of the Class "A" League.  Returning baseball lettermen include John Landon and James Bender, both pitcher-outfielders, along with Harry Kenney, outfield, Jim Hannahs first base, Bill Phillips second and Curt Johns outfield.  Track lettermen are Bender, dashes, shot; Johns, mile; Landon distances and relays; Chuck Mayse, hurdles and Kenney, weights.
