60 - It's Garaway And TV to the Sectional Tourney (2-27-60)

Garaway (19-1) and Tuscarawas Valley (16-4) will carry Tuscarawas County hopes into future Class "A" Tournament play. The squads, finishing No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in league warfare this season, gained that distinction by nabbing victories in last night's county semi-finals in the Dennison High gymnasium before a sellout crowd of more than 1,800. Garaway let loose with a finishing kick that left Strasburg (8-12) far behind in a 79-56 decision. Tuscarawas Valley, playing in the opener of last night's card, trampled Tuscarawas (11-9) by an almost identical margin 75-53. By virtue of the victories, the 2 teams advance to next week's sectional in Dover's Memorial Hall. Drawings for the event , which also includes Holmes County representatives Hiland and Killbuck, non-county tourney victor Dennison St. Mary's, will be conducted at a dinner session tomorrow at 5:30PM in Helmkamp's Restaurant here.

But first things come first - and the first thing on the agenda is tonight's Tuscarawas County finale which is regarded important by both the Pirates and Trojans. The game is slated to begin at 8PM after which award presentations will be made by tournament director County School Supt. W.E. Laws. This is Tuscarawas Valley's second trip to the finals in as many years. Last year, Coach Bob Heller's crew lost 65-43 in the windup against Midvale. One thing the Trojans have in their favor is the law of averages. During regular season competition, Garaway won 77-68 and 73-60 decisions.

Garaway, under its consolidated banner, is making its debut in final night competition. Sugarcreek-Shanesville, one of the schools consolidated under the new title, gained the big night in 1947, but lost to Strasburg. The same thing occurred in 1945. Dundee, the other school involved in the consolidation, participated in the championship contest in 1941, losing to Midvale, in 1934, losing to Strasburg, and in 1928 losing to Strasburg again. It has never annexed the coveted title. Bolivar, which consolidated with Mineral City under the Tuscarawas Valley Flag, won the title twice and was runner-up 5 other times. Mineral City never was a tournament champion, but was runner-up in 1949, its lone such trip.
