60 - 38th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" Basketball Tournament Awards Night (2-29-60)

PHOTO: TOUGH COMBINATION TO BEAT - Garaway Coach Jim Stull, decked out in his lucky polka dot shirt and rabbit's foot (hanging from his belt), and Koran Zehnder, the Pirates ace scorer, were "sitting" on top of the world following Saturday night's final game. Stull was named Tuscarawas County's "Coach of the Year" and Zehnder "Most Valuable Player."

Tournament time is trophy time -- at least that's what it was for Garaway High School when the final curtain was dropped on the 38th Annual Tuscarawas County Basketball event Saturday night at Dennison. The lion's share of the "hardware" went to the school. Here's the "loot lineup" for Garaway:
*
1. The Daily Reporter Tournament Championship Trophy.
2. League Championship Trophy.
3. Koran Zehnder named Tuscarawas County's Most Valuable Player for 1959-1960 season.
4. Cheerleading team tied with Tuscarawas for co-award as top groups in county.
5. Coach Jim Stull named Tuscarawas County's Coach of the Year.
6. Zehnder and Charles Stingel named to the Coaches' All-County League Team.
7. Two slightly frayed nets.

In addition, each member of the Pirate squad received gold key-chain size basketballs. Bob Tidrick and Tom Dannis, both seniors, but relegated to bench duty, represented the team in receiving the league and tournament awards. Mary Jean Miller accepted the cheerleading honor on behalf of the student body, which she congratulated for its fine backing this season.

Zehnder, in receiving the Most Valuable Player award, joins a line of equally illustrious performers. The award was inaugurated in 1952 when Midvale's Dick Tollotti received it. Successive winners were Ken Huston of Port Washington, Jim Lorenz of Stone Creek, Terry Deems of Strasburg, Eldon Miller of Gnadenhutten, Rod Reinhart of Stone Creek and Ben Price of Tuscarawas Valley. The award has now made the rounds of 8 teams. No one from Baltic has ever received it.

Receiving the honor for the Tuscarawas cheerleading squad was Ann Johnson. Eddie Fox and Leonard McPherson represented the undefeated Midvale grade basketball championship team in receiving proper recognition. The team was 8-0 in league warfare and 14-0 for the season.
*
This year's coaches all-county team was not selected by a vote. They merely met and exchanged ideas with the conclusion being what they considered the top 10 players. Named to the team in addition to Stingel and Zehnder, were Clarence Cantrill and Ron Lake of Tuscarawas Valley, John Rice and Gary Gerber of Baltic, Ron Breniser of Midvale, Frank Wallick of Strasburg, Gary Caviness of Tuscarawas and John Hall of Gnadenhutten.

This year's tournament was moved to Dennison after a 19-year stay at Dover's Memorial Hall. It didn't break any attendance records, but the total paid admissions was 500 more than the total marked at the Hall last season. The final tally was 2958 paid. Last year's paid admission here was 2457.
