60 - For Garaway Revenge Is Sweet 57-52 (2-10-60)

A group of jumping, shooting, go-for-broke Priates (16-1) from Garaway High brought the Hiland Hawks (16-2) down to earth with a resounding thump last night in the Buc gymnasium at Sugarcreek. The Pirates, who controlled both boards despite the absence of their chief rebounder Charles Stingel, who sat out the first 3 periods with a strep throat, defeated their Holmes County rival. Playing before a capacity crowd, Coach Jim Stull's charges more than made amends for their only defeat of the season, a 60-56 overtime setback at Hiland December 19. Going into the big game the Hawks had dropped only a narrow 49-47 decision to Wayne County's Northwestern, which was ranked first in this week's Associated Press statewide Class "A" poll. Hiland coach Bob Schrock tossed a few choice plaudits in the direction of Garaway, "They have a real nice team. Tonight they made very few mistakes. That and the fact that they apparently were more determined to win than our boys was the big difference," he said. "Let's just say it wasn't our night." His team was right in the game until the very last seconds. Until the final buzzer sounded, the more than 1,000 spectators present had the feeling that the Hawks might pull it out of the "bag," much the same way they did in the previous meeting. But, Garaway was not to be denied in this, their probably finest hour of the season. "I think we played a real good defensive game," was Stull's brief comments. "Gerber did the job for us tonight under the boards," he concluded.

Jim Gerber pulled down 10 rebounds to pace the Bucs on the boards. In all the Pirates grabbed 49 as they controlled both the offensive and defensive boards. Stepping in to replace Stingel, who played the final period, was big Bill Yakley and he turned in a fine performance, proving to be a bulwark under the boards. He grabbed 8 rebounds as did Koran Zehnder. Tom Andreas added 7. Gerber also snared scoring honors for the night with his 19 points. Zehnder added 18 and Bob Raber contributed 11 more big points. Gene Gerber led the way for the Hawks with 18 points. Linus Miller, the leading Hawk scorer, added 15 on his hard to stop jump shot. In the first period Garaway held the lead until 4 minutes had elapsed. Hiland tied the count at 7-7 and maintained the frontrunner's spot, 15-13 at the end of the quarter. But the determined Pirates came knifing back. As the second stanza opened Gerber hit on a tip in and shortly after added a layup to put Garaway into a lead it held until 6:15 remained in the final quarter. Hiland rallied to tie the score 41-41. But, it was shortlived as Garaway, with Gerber, Raber and Zehnder connecting, regained it for keeps. Garaway led 31-25 at halftime and 30-37 at the third stop. From the field the Pirates were on the "losing" side, canning 22 of 64 for 34.4 percent. Hiland made 20 of 56 for 35.8 percent. The Pirates made 13 of 23 from the foul line and the Hawks 11 of 16. The Hiland Reserves won their game 39-36 over the Garaway Reserves (11-5).
