60 - Garaway Runs Away In The 3rd Period In 79-56 Win (2-27-60)

Garaway's fashionable Pirates (19-1) put on a splendid show, exhibiting the lastest in what it takes to stop an upset hungry opponent. Strasburg's Tigers (8-12) felt the brunt of that type of play last night after a brilliant bid to stop the tourney favorites. Rallying in the second period after falling behind 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, the Tigers knotted the count at 27-27 with 22 seconds remaining in the half. Garaway retaliated and took a "powder" with a slim 29-27 margin. Strasburg scored the first basket in the third period to tie the score again. But, it was no go. Garaway's poise suddenly appeared like a brilliant meteor. Taking the situation well in hand it thwarted the Tigers by scoring 5 straight points. It increased the margin and led 53-39 at the end of the period. Koran Zehnder, although failing to connect in the second period, turned in another top notch performance, ending with 30 points. Jim Gerber's play under the boards was a highlight of the contest in the well-oiled Pirate point machine. He added 9 points as did Charles Stingel. Bob Raber's driving thrusts resulted in 16 points and Tom Andress counted 13 points. Don Grove, who sparkled at his guard post for Strasburg, topped the Tigers in the point department with 15. Frank Wallick added 14 and Jim Clymer had 11. Garaway meshed 34 of 79 field attempts for 43.1 percent and added 11 free throws in 25 tries. Strasburg made 23 of 72 from the floor for 31.9 percent and 10 of 12 charity tosses.
