MALVERN - Although leading all the way, Port Washington's Purple Riders (7-7) had to stave off a last quarter rally to preserve their victory over the Malvern Green Hornets here last night. The Riders of Coach Dick King thus went back to the .500 mark in 14 starts. They took a 16-14 first quarter advantage and led at the end of the next quarters 30-24 and 45-37. The difference was at the foul line as the Riders canned 19 of 23 tosses. Each team hit 20 field goals. Jim Bender led the victory with 21 points, while John Landon had 19 and Bill Fisher 14. Tom Romano hit 20 and Barrick 22 for the Green Hornets. The Malvern Reserves; however, rocked the Port Washington Reserves (5-9) by a close 30-28 score.
