60 - Pirates Edge TV Foe 62-60 (2-29-60)

PHOTO: Garaway Pirates And It's Just The Beginning? Garaway fans hope scenes like this is just the beginning for their Pirates. A dream entertained by them would find only 7 games separating the Bucs from the state Class "A" crown. But Saturday managers, assistant coach Bill Ray (right) and players joined in giving Coach Jim Stull a victory "rub down." He was latr accorded the full treatment by being ushered into the showers fully clothed.

It was well worth the wait 16 years for Sugarcreek-Shanesville fans--and the end of an eternity for those from Dundee. Garaway, carrying the consolidated banner of those former combines, ended a long tournament title dry spell when it edged a courageous Tuscarawas Valley (20-1) combine in the finals of the 38th Annual Tuscarawas County Class "A" event Saturday night in the Dennison High gymnasium. The Pirates left no stone unturned. Following the game they reaped the awards of a spectacular season in which they accomplished one of the finest records in the state. Tuscarawas Valley (17-4), despite pulling just about every trick in its repertoire, continued in its bridesmaid role. Last season the Trojans were second in the league to Midvale and bowed to the Blue Devils in the tournament. This year it was Garaway that was just one step better. One step -- that's about all that separated the flashy fives in Saturday's contest. They had met twice in regular season play. The third meeting was the closest of all. More than 1,800 fans roared approval time after time as each squad swept up the floor to come up with an outstanding maneuver. There was never more than 10 points separating the combatants at any time. Charles Stingel and Koran Zehnder, the latter named the county's Most Valuable Player, turned in brilliant performances for the Pirates. Stingel undoubtedly played his finest game of the season. His work on the boards was superb. He scored 23 points, which included baskets via tipins as he outleaped the Trojan defenders. Zehnder, whose play throughout the season has been earmarked as outstanding and steady, kept the Trojan defense "honest" by pumping in shots from the outside. He completed the evening with 19 markers. TV's balanced point barrage was paced by Clarence Cantrill and Ron Lake. They hit 18 apiece, coming through with clutch baskets several times. Bruce Ickes, the Trojan center, scored 14 points. But it was his alert defensive play, resulting in blocked Pirate shot attempts, that was outstanding. Jim Studer added 12 points. The Trojans never led after the first period. They heled margins of 5-4, 9-8 and 16-15 in the opening stanza, only to fall to the runner-up slot each time. Garaway opened the second period with a rash of baskets that resulted in a 24-16 bulge. But the Trojans, paced by Lake and Ickes came rolling to tie the score 26-26 when the half ended. Midway through the last quarter Garaway again stepped up the pace, taking a 57-47 lead. But you have to hand it to Tusky Valley. It never quit! Faced with a time deficit it marched back to narrow the count to 60-58 with 45 seconds remaining. With 9 seconds to go and after Koran Zehnder had been fouled Garaway called time. Shortly after Zehnder, in calm, cool fashion swished the nets twice for what proved to be the winning points. Ickes connected for Tusky Valley as the clock ran out. Garaway connected 24 times in 67 tries from the field for 34.8 percent and made 14 of 21 from the foul line. Tusky Valley outgoaled the Pirates, making 25 in 65 attempts for 38.5 percent. It made 10 of 18 foul shots.
