62 - Tusky Nips Newcomerstown 68-63 (2-11-62)

NEWCOMERSTOWN - The Tuscarawas Broncos (9-9) finished even-steven for the campaign Saturday as they nipped a stubborn Newcomerstown (5-11) combine to end with a .500 season.  The Broncos of Coach Norton Miller will now move into county tournament action at New Philadelphia Thursday, meeting arch-rival Gnadenhutten (14-6) in the second of 3 games.  The host Trojans took a 19-12 first quarter advantage and were in front 32-24 at halftime before a big third quarter uprising by Tusky turned the trick.  Tusky outscored Newcomerstown 29 points to 17 to take a 53-43 lead at the end of 3, but fell behind again 62-59 late in the fourth.  Three highly significent steals by Junior Ivan Summers of Tuscarawas then sparked the game winning rally for the Broncos.  Freshman Russ McGothlin led the victory with 19 points.  Summers enjoyed his finest evening with 17.  Fred Burmich had 16 and Phil  Meese had 10.  Butch Williams led the Trojans with 24 points, while D. Williams had 13.  The Trojans were seriously weakened in the third stanza with the loss  of starter Ernie Art who went out with an ankle injury.  The Tuscarawas Reserves (9-7) also won the their game against the Newcomerstown Reserves 32-26.
