62 - Garaway Upsets Midvale 53-47 (1-26-62)

PHOTO:  UP, AND IN.  Garaway's Geof Stevanus goes through 3 Midvale cagers to lay in a basket and rack up 2 more points for the pirates.  Midvale players are Neal Beans (42), Dean DeMattio (12) and Walt Weaver (40).  Garaway won 53-47.

MIDVALE - Canning 5 free throws in the final 2 minutes, Garaway (5-1) (12-5) used their well-practiced control offense at the right time last  night in preserving the big upset at Midvale (5-1) (12-3).  There was nothing "slow" about the previous 30 minutes of the game; however, as Coach Glen Bower unleashed a fast-stepping offense and a harassing defense against the Devils of Coach Pete Hilliard.  The Pirates took a 2-0 lead, were caught at 2-All and they then went the rest of the way in the driver's seat, Midvale rallying several times to within 2 points.  Although the Pirates did lead all the way, the jam-packed house that looked on was provided with plentyof excitement as the Devils staged rally after rally to keep the Pirates honest.  Roy Yoder drove in for an unmolested bunny to start it off.  Dean DeMattie matched it for Midvale for a 2-2 tie, which turned out as the only deadlock of the game.  Hitting 60 percent of their action flings in the first quarter, Garaway pushed in front 15-4 and was on top 17-9 at the halt.  The Devils  hit 7 of 14 in  the second quarter, their only solid stanza in the game from  the field, and rallied to within 2, 29-27, only to see Geof Stevanus can a 30 footer from mid-court at the buzzer as Garaway took a 31-27 nod into the dressing room.  It again appeared that Midvale would catch the Pirates in the early minutes of the third with Neal Beans dropping 2 outside flings for a 34-32 count, but the Pirates were not to be had and took a 42-36 lead into the final period.  Beans again hit from outside in the fourth to cut the margin back to 4 at 42-38 with 6:45 minutes remaining.  Continuing to use their fast hands, the Pirates dug in, and went into a control offense.  With 2:50 minutes left, the Pirates had upped their lead to 48-38, Midvale having some costly turnovers as well as another dry spell as it missed 8 straight action flings as Garaway all but iced the cake for keeps.  Five straight charity tosses off the control then sewed it up.  Garaway potted 21 of 56 shots for 37 percent and Midvale made 19 of 60 for 32 percent.  Dan Bleininger, playing a standout defensive and board game led Garaway with 18 points, while playmaker Yoder hit 15.  Beans topped the Devils with 14 and Bob Byers. had 10.  Their was no mention of a Reserve game.
