62 - Conotton Valley Upsets Midvale 60-56 (1-14-62)
LEESVILLE - Their second 5-game winning streak of the season snapped, Midvale's Blue Devils (10-2) were looking ahead to this week's important menu. There was little time for the Devils to even fret about their setback to Conotton Valley (7-3) on Saturday as they must host a dangerous Lakeland team Tuesday and then risk their league leadership at Tuscarawas on Friday. There was little dispute as to just where the difference rested at Conotton Valley Saturday as the schools hooked up in a thrilling, well-played engagement at Leesville. The margin of victory came at the foul line for the accurate shooting Rockets. Midvale out-goaled Conotton 23 to 20, but failed miserably at the charity stripe where the Devils could can only 10 of 22 chances. Conotton, on the other hand, swished 20 of 24 attempts. Coach Pete Hilliard's Devils went in front by as much as 3 points with 3 minutes left in the game before 3 costly turnovers gave Conotton the chance it needed to break it open. Jerry Rippeth paced Coach Dave Scott's combine with 17 points, while Russ Garner chimed in with 14 and Bill Tope canned 11. Dean DeMattio led Midvale with 17, Neal Beans had 15 and Walt Weaver 12. Midvale has lost only to Gnaden 58-50 and Conotton. The Rockets have lost to Hiland, Jewett and Hopedale. The Midvale Reserves (12-1) continued their winning ways by downing the Conotton Valley Reserves 48-32.
