DOVER - Powerful Dover St. Joseph's (15-0) exploded for 27 points in  the second quarter Saturday to take the color out of the invading Port Washington Purple Riders (5-14).  The undefeated Ramblers, ranked 8th in the state in the latest Assocated Press poll for Class "A" schools, had a surprising battle on  their hands through  most of the first quarter as upstart Port Washington threatened to execute one  of the season's biggest upsets.  After trailing 6-2, Port Washington fought back to take the lead at 13-12 and again at 15-14, temporarily stunning the Ramblers and the  Memorial  Hall crowd.  Three quick baskets by Jerry Rieger, Jack Evans and Nick Pace quickly ended the uprising and put St. Joseph's back on  the victory trail.  Port Washington never threatened again.  Coach Art Teynor was generally pleased with the performance.  He added; however, that the Ramblers were obligated to  stick pretty much to straight basketball.  "Too  many scouts at the game," reasoned the  Rambler coach.  The Ramblers immediately turned their attention to Thursday night and the upcoming struggle with arch rival Dennison St. Mary's.  The Ramblers won 73-60 here in the first game of the year.  "St. Mary's is always tough to beat on its own floor," said Teynor, reflecting on St. Joseph's chances.  Senior Jerry Rieger led the way for St. Joseph's Saturday.  The forward, who has spent most of his time concentrating on defense and rebounding this season, poured in 11 points in the first quarter and went on to finsh with 25 for game honors.  Although failing to score in the last period, the total stood as a career high for Rieger.  Of the "big 3", who  have  led area scorers almost from the first game on, only Nick Pace was able to score well.  He dropped in 21 points, 9 coming in the second stanza.  Jack Evans netted 7 before fouling out with 2:40 left in the third quarter.  It was the first  time this year that the big center had failed to score in  double figures.  Tom Young, the area's top scorer netted only 13 points, his  season low.  Bill Held tallied 12 points for the Ramblers.  Alvin Fillman finished with a flurry to pace Port Washington with 16 points.  Tony Nigro had 14 and Larry Laisure had 13 as the Riders ended regular season play.  St. Joseph's experienced oneof its poorest shooting nights,  making only 35 of 91 attempts for 38 percent.  The Ramblers made only 17 of 35 at the foul line.  Port Washington dropped in 21 of 65 for 32 percent.  In the Reserve game, Dover ended Port Washington's season by beating them 35-22.  Port's record is 4-12.

NOTE:  Garaway and Tuscarawas Valley were scheduled to make up their "forfeited" game tonight,  following a ruling by the Tuscarawas County League Athletic Assocation Saturday.  The game had been ruled a 2-0 forfeit victory for Garaway (a league game) last week when a flu epidemic at Tuscarawas Valley prevented the game from being played Friday as scheduled.  Several county schools questioned the "ruling" and the athletic association decided that the game should be played.  In announcing the ruling on the game, Athletic Association President John Toth of Port Washington said it was hoped that a policy could now be established on further postponements.  "It was just one of those things that never occurred before.  We had no reason to have had a ruling on it," he explained.  And so the game will go on tonight at Garaway.  Highly interested in the outcome will be Coach Pete Hilliard and the Midvale Blue Devils, who would emerge as the undisputed league champions if Tuscarawas Valley should pull an upset.  (The Daily Times, 2-12-62)
