62 - Midvale Halts Gnaden 69-61 (2-2-62)
MIDVALE - Coach Pete Hilliard's Midvale Blue Devils (6-1) (13-4), snapped the 4-game winning streak Gnadenhutten had on them over 2 years. Earlier this year Gnadenhutten took the Midvale combine 58-50 at Gnaden, but last night's affair was most important since it was a league game. The Devils, who shot 44.4 percent from the field on 30 of 68 attempts, found the first period go in favor of the invaders as they held a 11-10 edge at the end. However, the Devils took over and stayed in front with just under 2 minutes to play in the second period when Neal Beans popped a pair of charity shots in at 2:55 for a 23-21 margin in the second period. They went from a 33-26 halftime lead to a 55-41 margin at the end of 3 stops. For the night, Gnaden shot a good 36.8 percent on 21 of 57 shots, while from the foul line the Indians were 19 for 28. From the charity stripe, Midvale missed only one shot in 10 attempts. Beans paced the Devils and took the night's scoring laurels with 25 points, while Dave Belknap followed with 19. Bob Ervin paced the Indians with 24 markers, while Jim McCreary followed with 11 and Dave Struchen who did a good job on the boards for the losers, hit 10. Beans, Page, until they fouled out with 1:50 to play, and Belknap controlled the boards for Midvale. Gnaden has now lost 3 of its last 5 games, while Midvale snapped a 2 game losing streak. Midvale (14-2) blew away Gnaden (11-6) in the Reserve game by a score of 56-38. In the Junior High game, Midvale was again the winner by whipping Gnaden 32-20.
