62 - Garaway Squeaks By Strasburg 48-46 (1-12-62)
SUGARCREEK - Garaway's Pirates (3-1) (9-3) had to fight all the way for their 9th victory and their 4th in a row. Coach Warren Binder's Strasburg Tigers (1-3) (5-6) snarled and clawed their way to a 12-8 first quarter lead, but the Pirates filled their sails with a fresh wind and raced to a 23-21 halftime edge. The second half was a hectic affair, with the score always close. Garaway led 37-34 after 3 periods and then managed to hang on for the victory. Coach Glenn Bower lauded Dan Bleininger, Garaway's only 6-footer, for controlling the backboards by pulling in 11 rebounds. Bleininger finished with 13 points, sharing high point laurels with Roy Yoder, Don Deetz had 11, Vic Gessner notched 13 points for Strasburg, backed up by Jim Clymer who hit for 12. Garaway made 20 of its 57 field goal attempts for 35 percent. The Strasburg Tigers were a little more accurate, making 18 of 49 for 37 percent. The Garaway Reserves (7-3) won the initial squeaker 38-36 over the Strasburg Reserves (2-9).
