62 - Dover St. Joseph's Gets By Tusky Valley 66-48 (2-4-62)

ZOAR - Playing inspired basketball, The Tusky Valley Trojans (2-14) gave the undefeated Dover St. Joseph's Ramblers (14-0) some uneasy moments before falling Saturday.  Realizing the hopelessness of trying to run with St. Joseph's, the state's eighth-ranked Class "A" quintet, Coach Bob Heller and his Trojans elected to stall and take the easy shots.  For awhile it looked as though it might work, and then suddenly the Ramblers pulled away.  The Ramblers win moved them a step closer to an undefeated season.  St. Joseph's closes out the season against Port Washington,  Dennison St. Mary's and Fairless.  The game with Mt. Vernon St. Vincent, which had to be postponed because of influenza, has been canceled.  "We're glad to get that one out of the way," commented Coach Art Teynor after the game.  "The 2 week layoff hurt us a little bit.  Now we can get back to work," he added.  TV saved one of its best games for the invading Ramblers.  The Trojans were in the game until midway in the third quarter, and then it was all over.  The first quarter was close all the way with St. Joseph's taking a slim 14-10 lead at the stop.  The stubborn Trojans continued to stay close  in the second stanza and trailed by only 6 points, 26-20, at halftime.  Tusky Valley attempted only 11 shots the entire first half,  but drilled home 8 for an amazing 72 percent.  The Trojans couldn't keep the  pace in the third quarter; however, and fell behind 42-30.  St. Joseph's led by as much as 22 points in the 4th quarter.  Commenting on  the stall, Teynor said, " It was good experience for us.  We'll  probably run up against it again and now we'll be ready for it."  Tusky Valley finished with a fine 51 percent from the field,  making 19 of 37 attempts.  St. Joseph's made 25 of 55 for 45 percent.  Tom Young, the area's leading Class "A" scorer, hit his season low as he totaled only 15 points for the evening.  It was the first time in the last 12 games that he failed to score 20 points or more.  Leading the Ramblers was Jack Evans with 19 points.  Nick Pace had 17 and Jerry Rieger 11.  Dean Nemetz and Don Crilley paced Tusky Valley with 15 and 13 respectively.  The Tusky Valley Reserves (12-3) upset the Dover St. Joseph's Reserves (13-1) 29-25 to end the young Rambers' 19-game winning streak extending over the last two seasons.
