62 - Newcomerstown Comeback In 51-39 Win Over Stone Creek (12-30-61)

NEWCOMERSTOWN - For most of the first half it appeared that Stone Creek's Panthers (2-7) were going to run away with the Consolation Title against the host Newcomerstown Trojans (1-5).  The Panthers, who lost to Tournament Champion Dover St. Joseph's 83-56 in their first tournament start, clawed their way to a 12-6 first quarter lead.  With Newcomerstown finding it almost impossible to put the ball through the basket, Stone Creek increased its lead to 17-8 before the Trojans narrowed the margin to 21-16 at the half.  In the first half, Newcomerstown hit an atrucious 12 percent from the field.  The Trojans made only one of their first 18 field goal attempts.  Stone Creek didn't do much better, making only 28 percent of its 34 action heaves.  In the second half, the shooting percentages turned around as Stone  Creek failed to get a field goal until 3:55 of the game remained.  The Panthers missed 18 straight shots after intermission and connected on only 2 of 24 attempts in the second half, slightly over 8 percent.  For the game, Stone Creek  made 11 of 58 for 19 percent and Newcomerstown hit 17 of 63 for 27 percent.  Both teams made 17 of 25 at the foul line.  After intermission, Newcomerstown fought back to take the lead, 22-21, at 5:40 of the third quarter.  The Trojans pulled ahead by 2 and then went ahead to stay when Ernie Art swished 2 straight corner jump shots to make it 32-25 as the third frame ended.  Gary Gunn sparked Newcomerstown with 19 points, giving him 36 for the tournament.  Art finished with 13 and Butch Williams netted 11.  Verle Endlich topped Stone Creek with 14 points.  Cliff Endlich was next with 7 counters.
