62 - Midvale Falls At Gnadenhutten 58-50 (12-12-61)


GNADENHUTTEN - The Gnaden Indians (4-1) and the Midvale Blue Devils (5-1) exchanged 2 good quarters apiece last night at Gnadenhutten, but the Indians had the better 2 to hand the Devils their first loss of the season after 5 straight wins.  The Indians outscored the Devils 18-8 in the first period and 15-8 in the third, while the  Devils held the  top hand in the second, 13-9 and the last, 21-16.  Midvale also outscored the Indians from the field 22-21, but the Indians capitalized on 16 of 27 foul tosses, while Midvale hit on 6 of 10.  From  the field, Gnaden hit on  21 of 59 for 35.5 percent, while Midvale hit on 22 of 57 for 38.5 percent.  The Devils played the last 2 and a quarter periods with All-County performer Neal Beans on the bench due to  a knee injury received in the final seconds of the Devils' game with Strasburg December 5.  Beans, while in the game, managed only 2 buckets for 4 points.  He had been averaging nearly 19 points per game.  Three men hit in double figures for Coach Ron Sakola, led by Jim McCreary and Brad Kaiser with 17.  Bob Ervin was close behind with 16 markers.  Walt Weaver hit for 18 to lead Midvale with Bob Byers chipping in with 12.  McCreary sat out the first half of the game and was inserted into the lineup with 6:15 to play in the third canto.  He was the Indians' big man from then on as he hit on 6 of 11 fielders and 5 of 6 charity tosses.  The 2 clubs exchanged buckets to start the game and then the Indians hit for 14 straight points before Midvale could find the range with the clock showing 2:10 in the first.  Kaiser was the big man in this stretch with 5 straight buckets at one point, while Ervin had 3.  With the scorfe 33-29 midway in the third period, Ervin, Kaiser and McCreary combined  to rack up 9 straight points,  while the Devils went scoreless.  The Midvale Reserves (6-0) blew away the Gnadenhutten Reserves (2-3) 53-26.
