SUGARCREEK - Using a deliberate style offense, the Garaway Pirates (4-0) remained unbeaten last night when they stopped the Gnadenhutten Indians (2-1).  Coach Glenn Bower's quintet used a tight pressing defense in the first half, which led to just 2 buckets, but kept the Indians on a tight-rope walk.  The powerful, but not tall, Pirates played control ball, and often held it for several seconds---and at one time in the game, held the ball for a minute and sixteen seconds before they even looked at the hoop.  They also stalled most of the last period.  "They did a wonderful job," Coach Bower said after the game.  "We had 2 boys (Roy Yoder and Wayne Burky) out with the flu, most of the week and they did a wonderful job in there, despite the fact that they were weak."  As a matter of fact, Roy Yoder appeared to be the "take charge man" and tied for the night's laurels in the point department for the winners.  He hit 8 points, as did Senior veteran Dan Bleininger.  Brad Kaiser led the Tribe in the point department with 9, while Jim McCreary, who fouled out in the third period with 20 seconds to play, followed with 6.

In the first period, Gnaden failed to connect on 8 attempts from the field and converted only once in 3 attempts from the charity line.  Meanwhile, Garaway hit on 5 of 10 attempts from the field, but did not fire from the charity line.  In the second period, Gnaden caught fire and connected on  6 of 13 from the field and 4 times at the foul line  for 16 points to Garaway's 11.  In the third period, the winners hit on only 2 of 11, while the invaders once more scored only one point.  Then in the last period, Kaiser led the Tribe when he shot 3 fielders.  For the night, Gnadenhutten shot 26.1 percent on 11 of 42 attempts, while Garaway connected on 15 of 44 for 34.0 percent.  In the Reserve game, Garaway (2-1) pulled away from Gnaden (1-2) for the 37-22 triumph.
