62 - Strasburg In Double Overtime Win With Hiland 67-65 (12-10-61)

STRASBURG - Sophomore John Peters came off the bench late in the game to stuff in 4 points in the second of 2 overtimes Saturday night to lead Strasburg (1-2) to its first victory in 21 games with the decision over Hiland.  Trailing by 7 points when the final quarter opened, Strasburg, which lost 18 straight last year and 2 this season, fought back to take the lead near the end of the game, but Hiland's Fred Menvez drove in for a layup to knot the score at 61-61 and send the game into overtime.  Big Andy Ahijevych stuffed in a shot for a 63-61 Hiland lead shortly after the first overtime started and the Hawks managed to gain possession and hold onto the ball until less than a minute remained on the clock. With just 20 seconds remaining, Strasburg's Vic Gessner scored on a 15 foot jump shot from near the foul line to necessitate the second overtime.  In the second extra period, Hiland could manage only a foul shot apiece by Don Hochestetler and Jim Gerber, while Peters tallied 4 points for the Tigers.  Peter's winning basket came with only 10 seconds remaining.  With the hometown crowd going wild, the Tigers defended desperately against a last-second Hiland shot.  When it came it was slightly off target and a 20-game losing streak had ended.  Coach Warren Binder, elated with the victory, looks for a bright future the rest of the season for the Tigers.  "I've felt all along that it was just a matter of breaking the ice.  Now that we have, I feel that we're definitely in contention for the league championship."  Jim Clymer and Adrian Edie paced the Tigers with 17 and 16 points respectively, but Binder got sound scoring from several others.  Ahijevych meshed 23 to pace Hiland, Mullet had 13.  The Hiland Reserves crushed the Strasburg Reserves (0-3) 42-21.
