61 - Midvale Rips Augusta 74-27 In Cage Opener (11-23-60)
MIDVALE - Throwing up a stringy defense, The Midvale Blue Devils (0-1) opened their basketball season on a victorious note last night, blasting Augusta. The invading Augusta combine tallied only 8 points in 3 quarters, while "exploding" for 10 in the second stanza. Midvale posted a 16-5 lead in the first quarter and held a 38-24 lead at halftime. But, while the Devils rolled up 20 points in the third the Vikings made ony one and Midvale hit for 16 in the final with Augusta totaling two. Rick Belknap led the Devils with 17 points, while Neal Beans hit 16. Bob Byers had 12 and Warren Leggett canned 10 with Midvale cleaning the bench in the second half. Wes Crawford led Augusta with 12 points. The Midvale Reserves (1-0) also hammered the Augusta Reserves 45-16.

MEET THE MIDVALE BLUE DEVILS - Opening his 7th year at Midvale, Coach Pete Hilliard has two lettermen back from last year's squad which copped 11 of 19 games. Back are Warren Leggett (5-10), Senior and Neal Beans (6-2), Junior. Other promising prospects include Gary DeMattio (6-0), Senior; Rick Belknap (6-0), Mike Page (6-1), Walt Weaver (5-9), and Jim Tidrick (5-8), all Juniors; and Bob Byers (5-9), Jim Leggett (5-10), and Rick Hoover (5-6), all Sophomores.
